The largest literary festival in the Nordic countries celebrates its 30th anniversary
Oh! How we enjoyed spending last week at the Norwegian Festival of Literature, in Lillehammer! Along with crowds of happy festival goers, we celebrated the festival’s 30th anniversary and a wonderfully packed program with a focus on Sápmi. It was a sheer delight to take part in it all.
NORLA hosted a program for ten translators of Norwegian literature, and one of many highlights was our traditional translator’s lunch: Babel’s Feast. Here our translators got to meet their Norwegian colleagues, members of the Norwegian Assoc. of Literary Translators. Great company and lots to talk about!
Other highlights in our program were our translation workshop on an extract from Sigbjørn Skåden’s novel Backwoods Fable (original title in Norwegian: Planterhaug / in Torne Sámi: Láŋtdievvá), led by translator and literary agent Olivia Lasky, and later we had a great presentation by the author himself. The book is one of NORLA’s Selected Titles this spring.
Tusen takk to all the translators, to Sigbjørn and Olivia – and to all authors/joikers/illustrators/moderators/quiz master taking part in the rich festival program.
We would also like to extend a BIG congratulations to the largest – and perhaps most hard working – literature festival in the Nordic countries.
