Ane Barmen and Skinkeape - Selected Title Authors
We are happy to present our selected title author Ane Barmen. She has written Melody! (original title: Tone!), which is illustrated by Skinkeape. The book is one of NORLA’s Selected Titles of the autumn 2024.
What is your book about?
Melody! is a story about being five years old and wanting to be included. The main character Tone just wants to be with her older brother Daniel, but he is busy with the school marching band and his friend Ingeborg and doesn’t have as much time for his little sister as before.
Tone tries various ways of winning Daniel back, but this just causes trouble, and quite a lot of yelling. Maybe she should try something totally new – on her own, without Daniel?
This is a book about the joy of music, and about finding your own place in the world.
What inspired you to write this book?
I love school marching bands! I’m a marching band veteran, and wanted to write a story about this world for children. I wanted to say something about how there is room for everyone, whatever qualities they have. You just have to find your own way in.
But above all, I just wanted to write a fun book that’s funny, musical, and has a cheerful, energetic protagonist. I think that Hamkeape’s illustrations have created a wonderful visual universe, and hope that many children will want to get to know Tone and the others in our story.
