What inspired you to write this book?

Children inspired me. When I’ve been on tour in Sápmi, many children have asked for a fairytale book with collections from other places where other children live. Children need “heart-maps” in the mythological world – so that when they arrive in the places where the tales originate, they have something to talk about.

Who is this book for?

This book is for anyone who wants to read Sámi fairytales to their children and grandchildren, and for preschools that need different kinds of stories for their story times. It is not a book meant to sit untouched on a shelf, but one for small hands to leaf through, pointing at the pictures, marveling at the stállo, the hulder, the insects, the animals, and the starry sky. The book embodies the intangible heritage of the past, wrapped as a gift for the diversity of the present.

Within this intangible heritage echo the sounds of the sea, the wind, the cold, the mosquito, and the joik. Each tale has its own joik woven in as an ancient tone.
