Hilde Hagerup - Selected Title Author
We are happy to present our selected title author Hilde Hagerup. She has written You Alone (original title: Du eneste). The book is one of NORLA’s Selected Titles of the autumn 2025.

What is your book about?
You Alone is inspired by the true story of Ruth Maier and Gunvor Hofmo. Ruth came to Norway as a Jewish refugee in 1939, at the age of 18. In the fall of 1940, she met Gunvor Hofmo, one year her junior, on a farm by Lake Mjøsa, where they were both working. They fell in love. They were young, queer, intellectually and artistically gifted, and ready for the world at a time when darkness was settling over Europe. Two years later, on November 26th, 1942, Ruth was arrested by Norwegian police and deported on the cargo ship Donau together with over 500 Norwegian Jews. She was killed in Auschwitz at just 22. Gunvor, who had lost her soulmate, spent years in and out of psychiatric hospitals. She still managed to write 20 poetry collections and is considered one of Norway’s greatest poets. Ruth and Gunvor’s story reminds us that real people have died and continue to die in wars and war crimes.
Who is this book for?
You Alone is a love story and a war novel for young adults and for anyone who’s been a young adult.
