NORLA’s Translator’s Award 2025 goes to Ana Flecha Marco
NORLA’s Translator’s Award was presented for the twentieth time during a seminar 17–19 October, which was organized by the The Norwegian Association of Literary Translators and took place just outside of Oslo. The 2025 award goes to Ana Flecha Marco for her outstanding work in translating Norwegian fiction into Spanish. Congratulations!
NORLA presents an annual award to an emerging translator talent working directly from Norwegian to encourage their continued efforts in promoting Norwegian literature. The award consists of NOK 20,000 and a two-week stay in Norway at NORLA’s Translator’s Hotel, Bondeheimen. The winner also receives a signed art print by Anna Fiske.
The prize is awarded annually, alternating each year between translators of fiction and non-fiction. The fiction award is granted courtesy of Kristin Brudevoll’s Anniversary Fund, and this year’s prize is awarded for fiction translations.
The jury, consisting of NORLA’s administration, has selected Ana Flecha Marco from Spain as the recipient of NORLA’s Translator’s Award 2025.
According to her business card, Flecha Marco describes herself as a “professional human translator and interpreter.” In just a few years, she has established herself as a solid and quality-conscious translator of Norwegian literature — a translator who masters all genres and who has an instinct for books with important themes.
She has translated prominent Norwegian fiction authors such as Maria Navarro Skaranger, Linn Ullmann, Nina Lykke, Helga Flatland, and Kenneth Moe, in addition to several works of non-fiction.
Across both genres, she has also translated a wide range of books for children and young adults, including works by Anna Fiske, Jenny Jordahl, Ole Mathismoen, Nora Dåsnes, and Bjørn F. Rørvik.
Flecha Marco’s first translation from Norwegian was published in 2019, and in just six years she has already translated 42 books from Norway. In addition, she translates from English and French — and is also an author herself.
The quality of her translations has been widely recognized by critics, award juries, and readers alike. Spanish readers who pick up books by authors they may not yet know, have come to trust that they are in good hands when they see Ana Flecha Marco’s name as the translator.
In 2024, Flecha Marco received the Esther Benítez Prize, awarded by the Spanish Literary Translators Association (ACE Traductores), for her translation of the novel Girl, 1983 (original title: Jente, 1983) by Linn Ullmann. She has also been nominated for the same prize twice in previous years.
At NORLA, we are particularly pleased to note that many of her translations have been published by eight publishing houses that NORLA’s administration had not previously been in contact with — something we are truly grateful for.
Flecha Marco is an active and proactive translator with a remarkable ability to match the right book with the right publisher. She has an extensive professional network and a deep understanding of each publisher’s profile — an impressive achievement, especially considering how “young” her career still is.
And speaking of age:
As NORLA prepares for Norway’s role as Guest of Honour at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair next April, we are especially pleased to present this year’s award to a translator who has worked extensively with books for young readers — since this genre represents the majority (22) of her translations.
We are also proud to honour Flecha Marco because she is a clear and passionate voice for the importance of human translation, and an advocate for improving translators’ working conditions and visibility.
