We are happy to present our selected title author Kirste Paltto. She has written Strange Happenings at Wild Lake (original title in North Saami: Luohtojávrri oainnáhusat), which is illustrated by Sunna Kitti. What is your book about?

The book is about two children, Ritni and Urbán, who fly on an eagle to Wild Lake. Laksi, who has spent the night in their tent and comes from Wild Lake, has invited them there. In Wild Lake, Ritni and Urbán experience things that they have never seen before, and have never been able to do before. They get to know the children in Wild Lake, they meet Stuorra Rávdu, Stor-Røya and Máđen, who have invented a Feathercopter that runs on solar power. Ritni and Urbán must use their imagination and courage. They make new friends. They view an alien world through the Wishing Ball. And finally, they get two wishing balls that help them solve more mysteries.

What inspired you to write this book?

I wanted to write a story for children about how to be creative without using machines and technology. I wanted to tell children about the relationship between children, nature and animals. I always use fantasy and events that aren’t always “natural”. Children are captivated by this.

Who is this book for?

For children and anyone who loves to fantasise. I also wanted to write a story about how to be creative without using technology.

How is your book different from other books in this area?

There is a lot of fantasy in the book, and it shows how problems can be solved with fantasy and creativity, and that you shouldn’t be afraid. Fantasy and the so-called “supernatural” are recurring elements in my books.
