The Value of Nordic Literature Exports 2024

It is essential to understand how literary export operates across the Nordic region and how we can further strengthen and develop our export strategies based on these insights, state the directors of the Nordic literary export organisations.

Today marks the publication of the first joint Nordic survey assessing the gross revenue generated from the sale of literary rights on behalf of Nordic authors in 2024.

According to the results, literary export revenues for Norwegian authors in 2024 totalled at least 11,9 million euros (from 979 contracts), while the total value of Nordic literature exports reached at least 78 million euros.

The survey was sent to agencies and publishing houses representing authors from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Faroe Islands and Iceland. The aim of the report is to provide an overview of the literary exports of the respective Nordic countries.
The survey was commissioned by the Nordic literary export organisations: NORLA – Norwegian Literature Abroad, Swedish Arts Council/Swedish Literature Exchange, Danish Arts Foundation, FarLit – Literature from the Faroe Islands, FILI – Finnish Literature Exchange and Icelandic Literature Center.

The next joint survey will be for the year 2025. This is an important part of the work to monitor developments in Nordic literary exports.
