NORLA's Annual Report for 2023
In 2023, NORLA granted subsidies for translation of Norwegian literature into 51 different languages. A total of 553 applications for translation grants were received, of which 546 were approved, distributed among 440 fiction titles and 106 non-fiction titles.
Children’s and young adult books account for just under a quarter of all translations, regardless of genre.
The 546 grants are distributed among 250 different authorships/collaborations. For comparison, in 2023, there were 510 grants allocated to 250 different authorships.
NORLA’s summary of 2023 shows that the most translated books are by Jon Fosse, Karl Ove Knausgård, and Jørn Lier Horst.
Norwegian books are translated the most into German, Danish, and Swedish. In 2023, translation subsidies were also granted for the first time for books from Norwegian in Frisian, Irish (Gaelic), and Thai.
