Ingvild Holtan-Hartwig - Selected Title Author

We are happy to present our selected title author Ingvild Holtan-Hartwig. She has written The Tundra Doctor (original title: Legen på vidda. Et år i Karasjok). The book is one of NORLA’s Selected Titles of the autumn 2024.

What is your book about?

The Tundra Doctor is the story of my first year as a doctor in the remote Sami village of Karasjok. Working as an intern at a large hospital in Oslo left me disheartened. The hospital was like a huge factory that lacked human compassion and the city an endless hassle about careers, demands and never having enough time. In desperate search of a more meaningful existence, as a doctor and as a human being, I moved 1,800 kilometres north.

In the book, I talk honestly and humorously about my encounter with a community and a way of life that is entirely different from what I am used to. I continually put my foot in it, but gradually become well-acquainted with the quiet life in the village where the nature is crucial and the concept of “time” barely exists.

I take readers into the doctor’s surgery and show them life as a doctor, several hours away from the nearest hospital. I am often on duty alone, and the responsibility feels enormous. I talk about meetings with vulnerable patients, difficult decisions and ethical dilemmas I have to make decisions about.

Who is this book for?

The book is for anyone curious about what it’s like being a doctor in the region. Or to quote one of my reviewers: “This book should be read by everyone who is a healthcare professional or patient – and everyone who knows a healthcare professional or a patient.” In other words, it’s for everyone!
The book is easy to read, you don’t need prior knowledge of the subject. It is humorous, light-hearted and entertaining. At the same time, the book touches on a number of serious topics such as acute and chronic illness, over-treatment, and it asks questions about what a good life is. The book is suitable for those who want to reflect on life and death, while at the same time having a smile.
