Are Kalvø - Selected Title Author
We are happy to present our selected title author Are Kalvø. He has written Only Countryfolk Long for Home (original title: Berre bønder lengtar heim). The book is one of NORLA’s Selected Titles of the autumn 2024.
What is your book about?
The book is an attempt to establish once and for all what is best: The city or the countryside? As long as I’ve lived, arguments like this have created a bad atmosphere: The capital against the rest of the country. Region against region. Village against town. I felt that the time had come to put these conflicts behind us, and that this was a job for me. I decided to spend a while living in Norway’s smallest municipality, Utsira, and some time in one of Europe’s biggest cities, London – then compare. The book is about living in a very small and a very big place, about the people I met and fell in love with, about where you actually consider home, and if it’s really that important?
How is your book different from other books in this area?
Obviously, I have to be careful about claiming this book is funnier than other books in the same genre, so let me put it another way. The book is both a kind of comedy travelogue replete with funny but mostly true stories from a very small and a very large place, and a book written in genuine wonder and with a genuine desire to understand why people choose to live in a different place and in a different way, and why it can be so strangely irritating for us that they do.
