Kristin Vego - Selected Title Author
We are happy to present our selected title author Kristin Vego. She has written Fading Light (original title: Sent på dagen). The book is one of NORLA’s Selected Titles of the spring 2025.

What is your book about?
The novel is about a young woman, Johanne, who moves out of the city and rents a room in a countryside home owned by a man named Mikael. Almost immediately, and almost imperceptibly, they slip into a lifelong love affair. Part of the package is Mikael’s young daughter and—drifting in and out of the house and their relationship—his ex-wife. Seventeen years later, Johanne is alone in the house, reminiscing about the life she and Mikael shared. We come to understand that he has passed away. Winter is approaching, and each day gets a little darker and a little colder. Johanne tells us about desire and jealousy, arguments and reconciliation, and above all, the way love manifests in fleeting moments of care and intimacy in everyday life. Fading Light is not about grief, but rather about life and the light that emerges in the act of remembering. It is a novel about nature and womanhood, fog and art, ghosts and Emily Dickinson.
What inspired you to write this book?
Many different things come together when you start working on a novel. In this case, notes I had gathered from a particular landscape over the course of a year became the foundation for this story. I wanted to capture the light and sounds, the temperature and scents, the rhythm of the seasons. At the same time, I felt a deep longing for this landscape while I was writing in Oslo, and that longing is woven into the nature I depict. The novel also grew out of the understanding that profound love can verge on sorrow, a fear of loss. I had a strong desire to write about intense, beautiful love. That’s why I wrote a story about a woman who loses her husband. Last but not least, I always turn to other literature when I start shaping a text. In my search for a way of structuring this particular story, I found inspiration in writers such as Daphne du Maurier, Elizabeth Strout, and Marilynne Robinson.
