THE RIVER-GIRL

On bright spring nights
when the sap is rising
in the birches
she tosses her hair
and sings
and dances before the mountain.
Now her game is over,
with white arms she hugs
the iron grey cliff
in a long
sighing ice-kiss.

Olav H. Hauge (1908-1994)
