What is your book about?

Mystery of Faith is a conversation between the winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature, Jon Fosse, and Eskil Skjeldal (author, Ph.D. in moral philosophy, and theologian). In this conversation, the reader gets close to Jon Fosse as he opens up about writing as prayer, early experiences with churches and meeting houses, and his path to a Catholic understanding of God and humanity. He talks about his own spiritual and mystical experiences, about alcoholism and illness, and about how he reconciles the freedom to be an artist with what many consider to be the constraints of membership in the Catholic Church with all its doctrines and opinions. Fosse views his own art in relation to his understanding of his faith and doesn’t consider his turn toward Catholicism to be a limitation of his artistic freedom, but rather the opposite.

Who is this book for?

This book is for anyone who wants to get closer to Jon Fosse as an artist and writer. Even though this is by no means a biography, the reader gets an intimate look at crucial events, intellectual reflections, and thoughts that Fosse is otherwise reluctant to share. If you enjoy Jon Fosse’s texts – be it his essays, drama, poetry, or novels – you will greatly enjoy getting to know the person behind the authorship that won the Nobel Prize in 2023.
