I wanted to write a book that made a difficult topic accessible to everyone. Dementia affects more and more of us, and the increase in prevalence is one of the greatest challenges for health and society worldwide.

Prevention is the safest path to fewer cases of dementia in the future. Governments bear the bulk of the responsibility, but I also want to motivate and empower each of us to make good choices to reduce the likelihood of developing dementia.

The first part of the book describes how dementia can be experienced and how it arises, is diagnosed, and treated. The second part – the main part – provides updated knowledge about modifiable risk factors and how risk can be reduced. The final part of the book describes how the narrative of making good lifestyle choices can also lead to anxiety, depression, and shame, and how the actual message of risk reduction must be conveyed without causing problems with mental health. I believe the book is a good mix of warning and encouragement, and I conclude with my own approach to balancing lifestyle choices for good health in the future with a good quality of life today and tomorrow.
