Scholarships and mentoring scheme

Purpose:

Both the scholarship and mentoring scheme are aimed at helping increase the competence of translators.

Who can apply:

Translators of Norwegian literature who translate directly from Norwegian.

What can the grant cover?

1. Both new and experienced translators can request a grant for a mentor in relation to a specific translation.

• The mentoring scheme is not a replacement for the foreign publisher’s copy-editing and proofreading work.

• The application must be project-related, and the translator must be able to show a contract with the publisher stating that the book in question will be published.

• NORLA pays a mentor for providing written and verbal feedback on up to 100 pages of a translation. A payment of up to NOK 7,000 is made for the work, but each sum is determined individually according to the scale of the project.

2. Scholarships for specific, individual competence-building for translators.

3. Scholarships for individual translators who conduct events that help increase the competence of other translators.

Application deadlines:

The 1st of each month.

Applications must be submitted at least one month before the activity is to take place.
All applications are processed in monthly meetings.

How to apply:

Applications must be submitted to NORLA via firmapost@norla.no. The application must contain: Project description according to NORLA’s template and budget (which can be downloaded below), a list of participants and an outline of the program.

Annual budget:

150,000 Norwegian kroner (NOK).

Processing of applications:

The grant is paid in full to the applicant in Norwegian kroner (NOK).

If the amount has been transferred and the project however does not take place, the recipient of the grant is obliged to immediately notify NORLA and return the amount received in full. If the awarded grant has been only partly used, the surplus amount must be returned. The recipient of the grant must disclose this in their report.

If the amount has been transferred and the project nevertheless does not take place, the recipient of the grant is obliged to inform NORLA immediately and return the full amount of the grant received. If a granted subsidy has not been used in full, the remaining amount must be returned. The grant recipient must provide information about this in the report.

The grant recipient (not NORLA) is responsible for ordering tickets for participants, and NORLA does not require receipts.

Any external information about the event must state that it has received a grant from NORLA and must display the NORLA logo (download logo here).

The decision about the grant is made by NORLA’s expert committee, whose members are Andrine Pollen, Oliver Møystad and Tanja Feodoritova. When necessary, the expert committee can obtain external expertise.

Reporting:

The applicant is obliged to submit a report following the activity, and no later than two months after the end of the activity. The report should include aspects such as implementation, results and goals achieved.

Applications can be rejected if reports from previously granted subsidies have not been received within the deadline.
