Sample translations for agents and publishers

Agents and publishers in Norway and abroad can apply to NORLA for subsidies for sample translations.

Sample Translation Subsidy for Publishers and Agents

Agents and publishers in Norway and abroad can apply to NORLA for subsidies for sample translations from Norwegian books into English with the purpose of sales of foreign rights.
It is possible to apply for funding for fiction and non-fiction for children and adults.
Applications can be submitted for published books that fulfill NORLA’s criteria for translation subsidies.
The translation must be directly from Norwegian into English.
Sample translations of NORLA’s selected titles will be given priority.

Agents and publishers are normally granted funding in the amount of NOK 3,000 – 5,000 per title, but applications are assessed individually.

It is the agent/publisher who handles practical matters in conjunction with commissioning and follow-up of the sample translation.

The subsidy will be paid after NORLA has received the completed sample translation and an invoice for the amount granted.

NORLA should be credited in the sample translation for the subsidy granted.
NORLA also reserves the right to use the sample translation at book fairs, in meetings with publishers and at various literary events – as well as on NORLA’s website.

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has contributed towards the scheme.

A special application form shall be used (below).
Application deadlines are: 1 March and 1 September.

In the event the sample translation should be cancelled, NORLA is to be notified as soon as possible.

A sample translation that has been awarded funding for the application deadline 1 March must be sent to NORLA at the latest by 1 June and a sample translation awarded funding for the application deadline 1 September must be sent to NORLA at the latest by 1 December. The subsidy will be revoked in the event the deadline is not met. NORLA is free to award any remaining funds at it sees fit.
