Levi and Leah Henriksen
Winter on the Savannah
Vinter på savannen
Winter on the Savannah is something as unusual as a literary father- daughter project. Levi Henriksen has written a YA novel in collaboration with his teenage daughter Leah. The starting point of the novel is equally unusual: Up a tree surrounded by aggressive hippos on the Kenyan savannah. The protagonist Eleanor is wondering which is worse: to be eaten by hippos or to live on.
The reader gradually learns that Eleanor is travelling with her stepfather, who she barely knows, and their circumstances are such that they need to relate to one another. Winter on the savannah is a story of a journey that leaves an impression. It is a story of animal rights and preservation of natural diversity. But most of all it describes being young and having to live on after a great loss.
Levi Henriksen has previously written several critically acclaimed books for children and adults. In this novel for young adults he takes us to the savannah, and into the mind of a young girl who is searching for direction in life.
