Meet Leonardo Pinto Silva - Translator of the Month for July

Leonardo Pinto Silva has translated a range of books, both fiction and non-fiction, and used to live in Karmøy. Learn more about July’s Translator of the Month below.

Leonardo Pinto Silva has translated a range of books, both fiction and non-fiction. He is very well oriented about Norwegian literature and has a good sense of what books might do well in the Brazilian market. His interest for and knowledge about the Norwegian language and culture, started when he was an exchange student at Karmøy in 1988-89. Since then he has studied Norwegian as foreign language at University of Oslo and translation in Brazil, in addition to an MBA in Business Administration. In June 2023, he was awarded NORLA’s Translator’s Prize for 2022.

How did you end up translating from Norwegian?

It was totally random. I lived in Norway as an exchange student, a long time ago. I wanted to go back to Brazil and work with the Norwegian language, but I was very unsure at the time if it would work out. At the same time there aren’t that many people who can speak Norwegian in Brazil, at least not professionally, so that helped.
