Translation subsidy

NORLA’s translation subsidies are intended to encourage foreign publishers to publish books by Norwegian and Sami authors of fiction and non-fiction. Publishers from the entire world, including from the Nordic region, can apply for NORLA’s subsidies for translations of Norwegian literature.

Through our new platform, Norwegian Arts Abroad Application Portal, you can submit and manage applications, payment requests and reports. Login is required.

Apply for subsidy here!

If the portal or application form appears in Norwegian, please click “Language” in the top right corner and switch to English.

An important change is that the requested amount must be stated in Norwegian kroner (NOK), as grants are only paid out in NOK.

Other requirements:

- The applicant (publisher)’s name stated in the application must be the same as the account holder.

The applicant = account holder’s name.

NORLA cannot disburse translation subsidy to private accounts (as f. ex. CEO’s accounts) or to other departments/imprints of the applicant publisher. If a publisher applying for a translation subsidy is part of a larger publishing group (i.e. an imprint of a larger publisher) and the bank account is held under a different name, the application should be submitted by the larger publisher instead.

Publishers must register their user account in the portal using exactly the same name as the account holder, written in Latin characters.

When entering your bank details, please make sure to attach confirmation from your bank. This can be either an official document from your bank (preferably translated into English) confirming that your bank details are correct, or a screenshot from your online bank showing that you are the account holder. The application may be rejected if the applicant’s name does not match the account holder’s name.

- If the publisher wishes the translation subsidy to be paid directly to the translator, the translator must be a resident of Norway and submit the application on behalf of the publisher. To be eligible to apply, the translator must have a Norwegian organisation number and a registered sole proprietorship in Norway.
