Our Translator of the Month in March is Angélique de Kroon. She holds an MA in Scandinavian Languages, Culture and Literature from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and began her translation career translating from Danish. The first book she translated from Norwegian was Hel ved by Lars Mytting, published in Dutch as De man en het hout in 2015. The book quickly became a major success in the Netherlands. Focusing on the culture of woodchopping, it attracted significant media attention and has so far appeared in 18 print runs in the Netherlands. An entire episode of a popular talk show was devoted to De man en het hout, featuring the well-known speed skater Erben Wennemars, a football player, and a government minister. They all brought their own axes to the TV studio and engaged in a lively and enthusiastic discussion about the book.

In addition to Hel ved, Angélique has translated, among other works, Er mor død by Vigdis Hjorth, as well as books by several Scandinavian authors including Alex Schulman, Jonas Jonasson, Erik Valeur and Hanne-Vibeke Holst. She also regularly advises publishers on Scandinavian literature.

Dear potential fellows,

NORLA has the pleasure of inviting foreign publishers and editors of non-fiction literature to apply for our fellowship program, which this year will take place in Oslo from June 16 – 19.

The fellowship will focus on Norwegian non-fiction literature. On the program will be visits to Norwegian publishing houses, presentations by Norwegian authors, meetings with literary agents, as well as an extensive social program in Oslo.

The American author Marilynne Robinson has been invited to give the Fosse Lecture, and the Dutch translator Paula Stevens is the winner of the 2026 Fosse Prize for Translators.
At the invitation of the Royal Court, the Fosse Lecture and the awarding of the Fosse Prize will take place at the Royal Palace on Thursday, 23 April 2026.

We look forward to welcoming a new group of translators to our Translator Hotel at Bondeheimen in Oslo, where they will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Norwegian literature, language, and culture.
The spring session will take place from May 11–24, with up to five available spots.

Please note that the offer is only available for translators who translate directly from Norwegian, and who have translated at least two titles.

NORLA is looking forward to gathering ten translators of Norwegian literature in Lillehammer on June 2-5, as we do annually for the Norwegian Festival of Literature / Sigrid Undset Days.
This year’s festival theme of the program is Europe, and festival runs from June 1 through June 7.

Our translator of the Month for February is Fuyumi Nakamura, who translates from Norwegian, Swedish, and some Danish into Japanese. She lives in Fujisawa, Japan, near the sea. She initially worked with corporate translation from Norwegian to Japanese. In 2017, she made her debut as a literary translator of Norwegian literature with Making Things Right: The Simple Philosophy of a Working Life (Diary of a Carpenter – original title: En snekkers dagbok) by Ole Thorstensen, in collaboration with her colleague Lise Schou.
Since then, Fuyumi has translated, among other works, The Immune Mystery. Mum is a Puzzle (Mamma er en gåte) by Anita Kåss and Jørgen Jelstad, Adventures in Memory. The Science and Secrets of Remebering and Forgetting (Å dykke etter sjøhester) by neuropsychologist Ylva Østby and author/journalist Hilde Østby, and Theatre of the World: The History of Maps and the Men and Women Who Made Them (Verdensteater) by Thomas Reinertsen Berg.

We are very happy to launch our new application platform: Norwegian Arts Abroad Application Portal, which we hope will prove user-friendly both for applicants and for ourselves. The platform has been developed in e-Apply by Solea for the entire Norwegian Arts Abroad network*, of which NORLA is a part. Login is required.

Our translator of the month for January is Ana Flecha Marco, who translates from Norwegian, English and French into Spanish. She has lived in many different places, but has been living in Madrid and online since 2015. Ana is a trained translator and interpreter with a Master’s degree in Publishing. She has translated work by authors including Linn Ullmann, Nina Lykke, Gøhril Gabrielsen, Maja Lunde, Maria Navarro Skaranger, Helga Flatland, Anna Fiske, Jenny Jordahl, Nora Dåsnes, Ingunn Thon, Bjørn F. Rørvik and Kenneth Moe. In 2024, she was awarded the Spanish Literary Translation Association’s Esther Benítez Prize for her translation of Girl, 1983 by Linn Ullmann. In the autumn of 2025, she was also the recipient of NORLA’s Translator’s Award for her literary translations.

It is essential to understand how literary export operates across the Nordic region and how we can further strengthen and develop our export strategies based on these insights, state the directors of the Nordic literary export organisations.

Today marks the publication of the first joint Nordic survey assessing the gross revenue generated from the sale of literary rights on behalf of Nordic authors in 2024.

Our translator of the month for December is Are Tjihkkom, who translates fiction into Sámi. He works primarily from English, but he has also produced translations from Norwegian, Swedish, German, Finnish and Spanish. His main focus is on books for adult readers, but he tries to work on a variety of material from numerous sub-genres, including fantasy, comedy and science fiction. Are established his own publishing house in 2020 through which he publishes his translations, and has so far released nine titles, with the tenth underway. His mother tongues are Sámi and Finnish, and he uses the written language of Lule Sámi in his translations.
