NORLA to meet Nordic colleagues digitally
NORLA’s staff will be attending a seminar with our Nordic colleagues, January 13-14.
The employees at the Nordic literary offices meet annually. This year the meeting should have taken place in Copenhagen, Denmark, but it will instead be held digitally.
We look forward to exchanging experiences and future plans with our colleagues!

NORLA collaborates with Livres Canada Books in hosting meetings between Norwegian and Canadian acquisition editors:
Thursday Februrary 11 the focus will be on literature for children and young adults.

NORLA once again takes part in the Jaipur Literary Festival!
JLF claims to be the world’s largest free literature festival, with an overwhelming number of writers, participants and audiences from India and the rest of the world. This year, the entire festival will be arranged digitally. A side program at the literature festival is the industry meeting Jaipur BookMark, where publishers and booksellers from all over India and other countries meet to discuss industry issues, present and sell books, etc. This year, NORLA will lead a panel on children’s literature entitled Imagine: The Child’s World.
Webinar for translators
On Wednesday 24 February, NORLA is hosting a webinar for 8 translators from 8 countries on the translation of Ida Lødemel Tvedt’s essay Drafts from the Mariana Trench (original title: Marianegropen). The author will be present.

Deadline: Nominate candidates for NORLA’s Translator's Award 2021
NORLA annually hands out an award to a translator of Norwegian literature. The award is given for translations directly from Norwegian.
In 2021, the award will be given to a talented young translator of fiction as an encouragement towards continued efforts.

We are still living in a pandemic situation, which makes it difficult for us to invite you to The Norwegian Festival of Literature in Lillehammer and the brand new right’s centre: Lillehammer Rights.
Ahead of the deadline April 15, we encouraged you to register your interest for the digital Lillehammer Rights 2021 and save the dates 26-28 May.

Marie Aubert at Nordic Literature Night during the Leizig Book Fair
The critically acclaimed Norwegian author Marie Aubert takes part in the event Nordic Literature Night – Nordische Literaturnacht – with four other Nordic authors, during the Leipzig Book Fair.
The event is moderated by Thomas Böhm, and will be streamed on 28 May from 19:00 (CET).

Webinar for Russian translators
On June 9, the participating translators meet Siri Pettersen, who will present her authorship. Also on the programme is Alexander K. Lykke, a linguist and Associate Professor at Østfold University College (HiØ). He has been a consultant for Pettersen and also for the TV-series «Beforeigners» (original title: Framvandrerne). The two will take part in a literary conversation about their collaboration.
On June 10, the programme includes lectures and discussions by Russian translators who share their experiences of translating fantasy books. In addition, there will screening of NORLA’s selected title films.

NORLA's (digital) translator’s pastry shop
We are happy to offer this brand new service!
The translator’s pastry shop will open on Wednesday 23 June, at 15 (Norwegian time) to translators from Norwegian. It will be an informal, hour-long meeting, held once a month on Zoom, where we will eat something nice together that each participant has baked for themselves.

At NORLA our summer holiday begins on Monday, 28 June.
The office will open again on Monday, 2 August.

Norwegian literature in Czech: Celebrating 100 years!
Norwegian books have been translated into Czech for 100 years. The Masaryk University in Brno is offering an exhibition in the Moravian Library of this impressive collection of Norwegian literature; The exhibition ‘100 years – 100 books’ is part of the celebration of 100 years of Czech-Norwegian diplomatic relations. Exhibition organizers are Professor Miluse Jurickova and Martina Smidtova. And the selection of the 100 titles have been carefully made from the almost 1,500 Norwegian titles published in Czech dating from the oevre of Henrik Ibsen up to contemporary literature. NORLA will also visit its sister office CzechLit | Czech Literary Centre and meet Czech publishers and translators.
Thorvald Steen visits the Czech republic, and he will be in Brno to visit the exhibition on November 11th. Steen is the recipient of the prestigious Czech award Gratias Agit 2020, given in recognition of his efforts for democracy, freedom of speech, human rights and international cooperation.
Buch Wien, Vienna
Jørn Lier Horst and Marta Breen attend the Vienna Book Fair, Buch Wien, November 11-13, to present their books in German.
NORLA also visits the fair and we look forward to meeting Austrian publishers and translators.

Norwegian children's and YA literature in Shanghai
On November 18, The Norwegian Consulate General in Shanghai and NORLA host a seminar for Chinese publishers and translators, where invited Norwegian authors, illustrators and literary agents will participate digitally.
Norwegian authors to Switzerland
Hanne Ørstavik, Erik Fosnes Hansen, Erika Fatland and Anders Indset are invited to “Norwegian Day” in Kunsthaus Zürich on Sunday 21 November. The theme for this year’s Norwegian Day is “TIME: past – present – future”.

Webinar in Brazil
NORLA will, in collaboration with the Norwegian Embassy in Brasilia, host a two-hour webinar with Brazilian publishers, focusing on fiction. There will be screening of our selected title films, followed by speed dating between Norwegian agents and the Brazilian publishers. Translators of Norwegian literature into Brazilian Portuguese will also participate.
Literary lunch seminar in London
The Norwegian Embassy in London and NORLA invite translators from Norwegian to English to a lunch seminar at the Ambassador’s residence on 24 November. Publisher Karen Sullivan, Orenda Books, will moderate a conversation with authors Helga Flatland and Ingrid Christophersen. In addition, the translators will meet the authors Bjørn Vatne, Endre Ruset, Jon Ståle Ritland and Silje Ree. A number of journalists and publishers have also been invited.
Book trade meeting and public event in New York
In cooperation with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General in New York, NORLA will organize the following events in New York, Tuesday December 7:
- A book trade meeting for invited guests at The Center for Fiction.
Here the authors Selma Lønning Aarø, Monica Isakstuen, Victoria Kielland and Nina Grünfeld will introduce themselves to American publishers.
- An open event at Scandinavia House with author Torbjørn Ekelund and author and comedian Are Kalvø.
