Translators are absolutely key to spreading Norwegian literature around the world. Their work is of vital importance and to showcase this work in 2015 we started the interview series «​Translator of the Month​»​​. Here we become better acquainted with translators from the Norwegian language and their challenging work, which introduces Norwegian literature to all the different languages of the world.​​

In 2020 our series of interviews became a translator relay, where each translator passes the baton and a question on to a colleague. We are thrilled to continue our interviews with translators of Norwegian literature into a myriad of languages.​​

Our translator of the month for December is Are Tjihkkom, who translates fiction into Sámi. He works primarily from English, but he has also produced translations from Norwegian, Swedish, German, Finnish and Spanish. His main focus is on books for adult readers, but he tries to work on a variety of material from numerous sub-genres, including fantasy, comedy and science fiction. Are established his own publishing house in 2020 through which he publishes his translations, and has so far released nine titles, with the tenth underway. His mother tongues are Sámi and Finnish, and he uses the written language of Lule Sámi in his translations.

Norway will be Guest of Honour at the world’s largest children’s and young adult book fair, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which takes place April 13-16, 2026.

Norwegian literature for children and young adults is rich in both expression and genre, and explores a wide range of themes that engage readers of all ages.

The Guest of Honour programme offers a unique opportunity to showcase this diversity and bring stories from Norway to the world. The fair is an international meeting place for the children’s book industry, with a strong focus on illustration art. Each year it welcomes around 30,000 visitors and 1,500 exhibitors from 90 countries.

We look forward to presenting the full breadth of Norwegian literature for children and young people in Bologna.

NORLA invites proposals for professional programme events on the Norwegian stage at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, 13–16 April 2026.
Non-commercial organizations that promote Norwegian and Sámi children’s literature, illustration, and reading are invited to apply to present their own events aimed at a professional audience. Selected contributions will form part of Norway’s official Guest of Honour programme.
Application deadline (prolonged): 7 November 2025.

For a limited time, NORLA guarantees that translation grants awarded to publishers of literature for children and young adults will cover 50 per cent of the translator’s fee, up to a maximum of NOK 100,000 (approx. EUR 8,300). Grants are also available for production subsidies for illustrated books. The maximum grant amount is NOK 20,000 (approx. EUR 1,650).

The guarantee applies to the following application rounds:
June 1, 2025, October 1, 2025 and February 1, 2026.

The government is investing in Norwegian children’s literature and is making a major contribution to Norway’s Guest of Honour appearance in Italy this coming spring.
This significant contribution ensures broad and varied participation from Norwegian authors and illustrators, and will strengthen the Norwegian fair programme currently being developed.

The starting signal for the Norwegian Guest of Honour initiative for the 2026 Bologna Children’s Book Fair was an international opening conference held during the Norwegian Festival of Literature in Lillehammer in May 2023.

Translators abroad and in Norway can apply to NORLA for subsidies for sample translations from Norwegian books of interest.

The aim of NORLA’s translation subsidy is to contribute to increasing the number of Norwegian books that are translated, published and distributed abroad. NORLA’s board approves the criteria.
NORLA subsidises translations of Norwegian and Sami languages.

For translations from Sami languages, subsidies are granted provided the original has a Norwegian ISBN number and that it is for a market outside the Nordic region.

Publishers from the entire world, including from the Nordic region, can apply for NORLA’s subsidies for translations of Norwegian literature.
