NORLA's translation subsidies - Grants

Publishers from the entire world, including from the Nordic region, can apply for NORLA’s subsidies for translations of Norwegian literature.

Translation subsidies in 2022

2022: NORLA awarded subsidies to 510 publications of Norwegian books for translation into 46 different languages.
(Applications received were 521).
Out of the 510 subsidies granted, 410 were for fiction titles and 100 for non-fiction.
And 138 of NORLA’s awarded translation subsidies went to books for children and young people.

The total amount of subsidies granted by NORLA in 2022 was NOK 8,110,400.

Translation subsidies in 2021: A record-breaking number of languages

In 2021, NORLA received grant applications for the translation of Norwegian literature into an incredible 50 different languages, and it’s very exciting that three of these are languages we’ve never worked with before. For the first time, NORLA has awarded grants for the translation of Norwegian books into Hausa, Kazakh, and Northern Sámi.

2021: NORLA awarded subsidies to 521 publications of Norwegian books for translation into 50 different languages.
(Applications received were 527).
Out of the 521 subsidies granted, 394 were for fiction titles and 127 for non-fiction.
And 136 of NORLA’s awarded translation subsidies went to books for children and young people.

The total amount of subsidies granted by NORLA in 2021 was NOK 9,420,600.

2020:
NORLA awarded subsidies to 634 publications of Norwegian books for translation into 48 different languages.

(Applications received were 660).
Out of the 634 subsidies granted, 456 were for fiction titles and 178 for non-fiction.
And 178 of NORLA’s awarded translation subsidies went to books for children and young people.

The total amount of funding for translation from NORLA in 2020 was NOK 10,139,600.

2019:
NORLA awarded subsidies to 572 publications of Norwegian books for translation into 47 different languages.

(Applications received were 585).
Out of the 572 subsidies granted, 404 were for fiction titles and 168 for non-fiction.
And 136 of NORLA’s awarded translation subsidies went to books for children and young people.

The total amount of funding for translation from NORLA in 2019 was NOK 7.842.900.

2018:
NORLA awarded subsidies to 639 publications of Norwegian books for translation into 45 different languages.

(Applications received were 651).
Out of the 639 subsidies granted, 479 were for fiction titles and 160 for non-fiction.
And 197 of NORLA’s awarded translation subsidies went to books for children and young people.

The total amount of funding for translation from NORLA in 2018 was NOK 10,065,750.

2017:
NORLA awarded subsidies to 538 publications of Norwegian books for translation into 44 different languages.

(Applications received were 557).
Out of the 538 subsidies granted, 409 were for fiction titles and 129 for non-fiction.
And 152 of NORLA’s awarded translation subsidies went to books for children and young people.

The total amount of funding for translation from NORLA in 2017 was NOK 7,732,100.

2016:
NORLA awarded subsidies to 499 publications of Norwegian books for translation into 46 different languages.

(Applications received were 518).
Out of the 499 subsidies granted, 382 were for fiction titles and 117 for non-fiction.
And 129 of NORLA’s awarded translation subsidies went to books for children and young people.

The total amount of funding for translation from NORLA in 2016 was NOK 7,041,500.

2015:
NORLA awarded subsidies to 431 publications of Norwegian books for translation into 46 different languages.

(Applications received were 451).
Out of the 431 subsidies granted, 356 were for fiction titles and 95 for non-fiction.
And 114 of NORLA’s awarded translation subsidies went to books for children and young people.

The total amount of funding for translation from NORLA in 2015 was NOK 6,201,000
while the total amount applied for was NOK 18,381,300.

(Applications received were 431).
Out of the 419 subsidies granted, 343 were for fiction titles and 86 for non-fiction.
And 99 of NORLA’s awarded translation subsidies went to books for children and young people.

The total amount of funding for translation from NORLA in 2014 was NOK 6,508,100
while the total amount applied for was NOK 16,116,605.

Out of the 412 subsidies granted, 322 were for fiction titles and 90 for non-fiction.
And 84 of NORLA’s awarded translation subsidies went to books for children and young people.

The total amount of funding for translation from NORLA in 2013 was NOK 5,606,300
while the total amount applied for was NOK 14,263,900.

The total amount of funding for translation from NORLA in 2014 was approx. NOK 5,400,000.
