For many years, Norwegian authors have put their mark on the Leipziger Book Fair, but this year the Norwegian presence is larger than ever. The Norwegian Embassy in Berlin invites seven Norwegian authors to the fair: Jostein Gaarder, Maja Lunde, Øyvind Torseter, Ole Thorstensen, Gudrun Skretting, Erika Fatland and Håkon Øvreås. They will all perform at different venues during the book fair; Jostein Gaarder, Maja Lunde and Ole Thorstensen will also be performing at the famous Nordische Lesenacht on Friday March 24th.

In addition the authors on the NORLA’s program New Voices (Nye stemmer) will also come to Leipzig: Simen Ekern, Roskva Koritzinsky, Sigbjørn Mostue and Nils Henrik Smith will have a seminar with the German translators who have made sample translations of their texts, and together they will meet the audience at the Nordic pavilion, Hall 4, D300.

Håkon Øvreås and Øyvind Torseter will be awarded the «Leseluchs des Jahres 2016» prize, by Radio Bremen and Die Zeit, for «Brune» («Super-Bruno») in Wednsday evening.

On Thursday March 23, NORLA invites German translators to a gathering at the Grieg Begegnungsstätte to exchange information and ideas about Norway as Guest of Honour in Frankfurt 2019. The seminar will be followed by a reception where German publishers also are invited.

State Secretary for the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Laila Bokhari, will be part of the Norwegian delegation to Leipzig this year, along with chairman of NORLA’s board Aslak Sira Myhre, NORLA’s Project Manager Frankfurt 2019 Halldór Gudmundsson and Coordinator Literary Programme Frankfurt 2019, Andrine Pollen, together with NORLA’s Director Margit Walsø and Senior Advisers Dina Roll-Hansen and Oliver Møystad.

Their Majesties The King and Queen host the state visit from the President of Iceland, His Excellency Mr Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and Ms Eliza Reid, 21- 23 March.

In focus during the visit will be the two countries’ cooperation within the cultural field, education, science and innovation. And also the shared cultural heritage and the Icelandic-Norwegian cooperation in the Nordic countries and in Europe.
As part of the programme Tuesday 21 March the party will visit the offices of NORLA, Norwegian Literature Abroad.

NORLA once again invites the editorial staffs of all publishing houses in Norway to nominate candidates for our development programme for new literary voices, “New Voices”.
The programme is a part of the Frankfurt 2019 initiative, in the context of which the discovery and promotion of new literary voices is an important objective.
The programme is funded by Talent Norge and the Norwegian Publishers Association, while NORLA is responsible for its implementation.

The programmes first group of four authors was selected in the autumn of 2016 and the program started up in January 2017.

The deadline for nominations from editorial staffs is 15.03.2017.

NORLA will take part in the London Book Fair at Olympia, and you will find us at the Nordic stand, 6F70.

February 15 is the application deadline for translators of Norwegian literature regarding stays at NORLA’s Translators hotel spring 2017 (weeks 19-20, i.e. as of Monday May 5th through Sunday May 21st).
Please note that the offer is only available for translators who translate directly from Norwegian.

Thomas Enger and Hans Olav Lahlum are participating at the NOIR LITERATURE FESTIVAL in New Delhi from January 27th – 29th , together with around 30 other writers and speakers. Most participants come from India, so the Norwegian writers will form an exotic element at the festival. Crime fiction is a young and growing genre in India, so the writers can count on a large and enthusiastic audience.

Both writers are published by British publishers, so their book can also reach an Indian audience.
This is the third year this festival is arranged, NORLA and Norwegian writers were present already in 2015.

NORLA’s talent programme for the development of new literary voices «New Voices» (Nye stemmer) is a part of the project of Norway as Guest of Honour nation at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2019. The programme has been established in collaboration with Talent Norge and the Norwegian Publishers Association. The recruitment of new talents is a key element in the work of Norway as Guest of Honour nation and an important part of this endeavour is the promotion of new literary voices internationally.

Director Margit Walsø, and Senior Advisers Andrine Pollen and Per Øystein Roland will be out of office January 17-20, attending a seminar with our Nordic colleagues.
The employees at the Nordic literary offices meet annually, and this year the meeting will take place in Nuuk, Greenland.

The Nordic literary offices all administer The Nordic Council of Ministers’ funding scheme for the translation of literature and drama from one Nordic language to another. Read more about the scheme here.

NORLA administrates the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ scheme for travel grants for authors and lecturers who will visit institutions of higher learning abroad where instruction is given in the Norwegian language.
