Leipziger Buchmesse is an important venue for encounters between writers and their readers – and a unique arena for cosplay. In connection to Siri Pettersen’s Raven Rings trilogy we organised a cosplay competition in Norway. Now the winner has been selected.

Translated Days festival in Oslo

At NORLA, we are looking forward to next week’s Translated Days festival (“Oversatte dager”), at the House of Literature (Litteraturhuset) in Oslo.
From Thursday February 28th through Saturday, March 2nd there will be a myriad of translation-related events and entry is free. Most events are held in Norwegian.

NORLA will be hosting two events:

Friday March 1: at 13-13.45: Ut og selge bøker

Saturday, March 2: at. 12-12.45: Da Gleden med skjeden ble til The Wonder Down Under

Johanna Domokos - February's translator of the Month

The Translator of the Month for February is the comparative literary scholar, editor and translator Johanna Domokos. She is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Arts at Károli University in Budapest, and the coordinator of the Translation and Book Production Laboratory at the University of Bielefeld’s Faculty of Language and Literature. Together with her students – who studied Sámi language just for the projects- she published about a dozen books of Sámi and Nordic literature in German, English. For the 2019 Bookf Fair in Frankfurt together with Chsritine Schlosser and Michael Riessler they publish the first comprehensive anthology of Sami poetry translated into German. Their work is supported by NORLA.

2018 was a solid, record year for Norwegian literature abroad

Norwegian literature abroad is growing. In 2018, NORLA granted support for the translation of 639 books by Norwegian authors, into 45 languages. Making 2018 the best year there has ever been for Norwegian literature in translation.

– Never, in NORLA’s 40-year history, have so many titles been granted translation support, says Margit Walsø, NORLA’s director.

Banu Gürsaler Syvertsen - January's translator of the Month

Our January translator of the month is Banu Gürsaler Syvertsen from Turkey. Banu has recently translated Dag Solstad’s Shyness and Dignity, and is currently featured in the Nordic-themed January edition of the journal SabitFikir.

Touring exhibition of illustration to open Norway’s Guest of Honour year

2019 is Norway’s year as Guest of Honour at Frankfurter Buchmesse, and the first event in this Guest of Honour year will be the touring exhibition "Georg Grosz meets Mulysses on Slush Mountain. Modern illustration from Norway.” The exhibition will open at Felleshuset, at the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin, on January 23rd.

Meet spring’s New Voices

Next year, Norway will be Guest of Honour at the Frankfurter Buchmesse. Bringing forth new literary voices internationally is an important goal of the initiative. NORLA has entered into the development program, New Voices, in collaboration with Talent Norway and the Norwegian Publishers’ Association.

Increasing export for Norwegian literature

“Kunst i tall 2017” (English: Art in numbers 2017) is an annual report for the income of the cultural industries in Norway; literature, music, visual arts and performance, made by Rambøll Management Consulting for the Norwegian Arts Council.
The report shows increased sales of foreign rights of Norwegian books: the sale of rights, royalties and coproduction combined has increased by 9.4 percent annually since 2013 and the growth was 20 % from 2016 to 2017.

NORLA has entered into an agreement with IPR License

One of NORLA’s main objectives is to help Norwegian books and writers get the best possible attention abroad and thereby increase rights sales. NORLA’s agreement with the rights portal IPR License, intensifies these efforts.
